About This Wine
Heartland is 4 partners, one of whom is Ben Glaetzer: undeniably, one of the top winemakers in Australia. Another is Nick Keukenmeester, well known for his time working in the wine trade in Toronto (and perhaps his Canadian wife). Grant Tilbrook & Scott Collett form the backbone and foundation of the enterprise. Grant was one of the first to recognise Ben’s true potential and it wasn't long before they had formed a plan to make a range of unique and impressive wines.
Grapes were de-stemmed, crushed and pumped over twice a day through a ten day fermentation. The resulting wine aged in French and American hogshead oak barrels for 12 months before being bottled. A purple rim encompasses a core of deep ruby. The aromas are surprisingly dominated by red rather than black fruits and hints of spice. The blackberry fruit of the palate is accompanied by a playlist of spices, with cinnamon and licorice on high rotation.
This is delicious! It is bordering on sweetness but doesn't cross the line for me. The nose is ample with ripe blackcurrant/cassis, eucalyptus, pepper and vanillin nicely integrated. It is medium-full bodied, soft yet lively. Tannins are quite fine, alcohol is warm but not abrasive. The length is excellent. ~ David Lawrason, WineAlign, November 2020
